Time in T.S. Eliot’s poem and Robert Walser’s short stories
There exist instances in Walser’s short stories when time is an issue. In the short story “Full,” there were instances in time when the placard clearly illustrated to passengers waiting to board that the line should not be crossed because the omnibus was full. Walser writes “At times however, despite the rejecting, dismissive plaque, there would be a crowd pressing forward, expressing the impetuous desire to climb up and be carried off” But sometimes, they would always push forward since time was not on their side and required to climb and be carried away. Additionally, the conductor is forced to remind them many times that the omnibus was “full,” but this never made them relent from pushing ahead to board. Despite this, even a passenger board’s omnibus while it is in motion, signaling that time, was part and parcel of any alive and living person According to Walser, “Once again some hasty hothead is about to leap aboard, and once again an imperturbable “Full!”” this is what the conductor has to repeat. Even when he is reminded that it was “full”, he does not take it likely since time was important to him and wanted to travel. All these instances point to one fact that time is not an abstract but a valuable thing not to be lost.
This issue of time has greatly resembled time in The Dry Salvages. Where it is illustrated that the passage of time can never have an end. It is in this part of the quartets that in one’s development, time is essential. In Dry Salvages, the poet ensures that she steers clear of treating time as an abstraction. In some instances, she illustrates the hurriedness that travelers use in boarding a train and quickly settling to their snacks and newspapers. Eliot argues that “When the train starts, and the passengers are settled to fruit, periodicals and business letters” By the fact that they spare time to peruse business letters, it illustrates that this time cannot be recovered if not utilized. The poet manages to make the audience visualize the sea not only as a mass of water but as time consumed by voyages moving through the sea. This, in comparison to Wasler’s short story “Full” time, is both instances not considered as an abstraction. In Walser’s story, we see the passengers always determined to get on board despite many efforts made by the conductor to remind them that the omnibus is full.
In “The Two Strange Stories” by Walser, the theme of time is clearly illustrated. The man with the pumpkin head goes for a walk. According to Walser, “But the wind blew so hard that his eyes went out. He wanted to light them up again, but he had no matches. This is the incidence that made him wish for his death. The author illustrates the time he had to spend before dying, even though it was his wish to die. Walser states that, “So now he sat there, held his pumpkin head between his hands, and wanted to die”. But death did not come easily. He had to undergo the agony of a June bug, a child, and a bird. But even after death, there was still time for the June bug to eat the leaf, child to play with candle thumps, and bird to continue pecking.
This essence of time is similar to Eliot’s “Burnt Norton” in the quartet’s first section. Since the hypothesis is the future and the past is in the present. In the strange story, the present was the man with the pumpkin’s head desire to die. The future involved even after his death, he was still in the present since his body parts were still at play with the bird, child, and the June bird. The past was about his previous life during the walk with all his functional body parts, the walk, and the violent wind. In the quartet, this resembles the presence where a poet is helped with a singing bird to locate the children. The past being the poet hearing the singing and the future being the poet being able to locate the children.
